What to Expect When Getting Invisalign
Getting Invisalign aligners is a straightforward process, and here’s what you can generally expect:
Initial Consultation and Custom Treatment Plan
Your journey begins with an initial consultation with a dentist experienced in Invisalign. During this visit, your oral health will be assessed, and the suitability of Invisalign for your specific needs will be discussed.
If Invisalign is a suitable option, a custom treatment plan will be created for you. This plan outlines the expected duration of treatment and the anticipated outcome.
Digital Impressions
Traditional molds are replaced with digital impressions, taken using advanced technology. These 3D scans provide a precise and comfortable way to capture the current state of your teeth.
Custom Aligners
Your aligners are custom-designed based on the digital impressions. These clear, removable trays are created to gradually shift your teeth into their desired positions.
You will be provided with a series of aligners, each to be worn for about one to two weeks. You’ll need to wear them for 20 to 22 hours a day, removing them only for eating, drinking (except water), and oral hygiene.
Regular Check Ups
Throughout your treatment, you’ll have periodic check ups with your treating dentist to monitor progress and receive new sets of aligners.
As you progress through the aligners, you’ll notice your teeth gradually moving into alignment. Adjustments may be made to the treatment plan as needed.
Completion and Maintenance
Once you’ve worn all your aligners and your teeth are in their desired positions, your treating dentist will provide retainers to maintain the results.
Regular follow-up appointments and diligent oral hygiene are crucial to ensuring the success of your Invisalign treatment.
How Often Should You Wear Your Invisalign
To achieve the best results with Invisalign aligners, it’s essential to wear them consistently and as instructed by your treating dentist.
Full-Day Wear
You should wear your Invisalign for 20 to 22 hours a day, removing them only for eating, drinking (unless it’s water), and performing oral hygiene tasks like brushing and flossing.
Nighttime Wear
In some situations, your dentist may recommend nighttime-only wear, but this typically applies to specific cases and should be discussed with your treating dentist.
Regular Changes
You’ll receive a series of aligners, each designed to be worn for about one to two weeks. After this period, you’ll progress to the next set of aligners in the series. It’s crucial to adhere to the schedule and switch to new aligners as directed.
Follow Your Treating Dentist's Guidance
Your dentist will provide specific instructions for your Invisalign treatment plan, including when to change aligners and any adjustments to the wearing schedule.
It’s crucial to follow these guidelines for the treatment to be effective.
