It all begins with a thorough examination of the tooth in need of restoration. Just like the preparation for traditional dental crowns, the dentist starts by meticulously examining the damaged tooth and ensuring it is appropriately prepared by removing any decay or damaged portions.

Here’s where CEREC starts to differentiate itself from traditional crown procedures.

Instead of employing messy molds and putty, a digital impression of the prepared tooth is taken using a specialised intraoral scanner. This state-of-the-art scanner is painless and quick, creating a precise 3D digital model of the tooth, which serves as the foundation for the crown’s design.

With the digital impression in hand, the dentist harnesses computer software to craft the crown’s design. This is where the magic happens – the dentist can customise the crown’s shape, size, and even colour, ensuring it harmonises seamlessly with the patient’s natural teeth. This level of customisation is a significant advantage, as it results in crowns that not only fit perfectly but also look natural and aesthetically pleasing.

Once the digital design is complete and the specifications are fine-tuned to perfection, the CEREC system communicates with an on-site milling machine. This sophisticated machine takes center stage as it carves the dental crown from a block of high-quality ceramic material. Remarkably, this manufacturing process typically takes a mere 15-20 minutes, transforming a digital design into a tangible dental crown.

After this efficient manufacturing phase, the crown is now ready for placement. The dentist meticulously checks the fit and colour to ensure it matches the patient’s natural teeth seamlessly. Any necessary adjustments are made with precision.

Once everything is in order, the crown is permanently bonded to the prepared tooth using dental cement. The result is a durable, aesthetically pleasing crown that can last for years.
